Leadership Program Enters Second Year |
| |
Denise McDowell, director of performance management at St. Mary’s Hospital, is no stranger to networking. During her 27 years as a trauma/critical care nurse and administrator in the Navy, she was in touch with people all over the globe.
Now living with her family in Leonardtown and working for the hospital, she is developing a whole new network of people as a member of this year’s Leadership Southern Maryland program.
“This opens a whole new world,” said McDowell, one of 37 people participating in the program.
Now in its second year, Leadership Southern Maryland is a nine-month, fee-based program in which leaders from St. Mary’s, Calvert and Charles counties meet regularly to learn about regional issues from various professional points of view.

Leaders Learn from Each Other |
| |
Kelly Robertson-Slagel’s family goes back six
generations in Southern Maryland, but she is still meeting new people and learning new things about the area she grew up in as a member of the Leadership Southern Maryland program, which recently
started its second year.
“I’m finding out more about what’s going on,”
said Robertson-Slagel, a retention specialist with the Calvert County Department of Economic Development.
She and colleague James Shepherd, a business development specialist with the Economic Development office, are two of 37 members of the program, which
is designed to bring a diverse group of people together to
work on problems common to the tri-county region.
A spinoff of the Leadership Maryland program based
in Annapolis, the nine-month program is less about developing leadership qualities and more about gathering those who already have them to focus on challenges.
“It brings people together to figure out what the problems are and help craft a solution to it,” said Shepherd...

Creating a Network of Regional Leaders -
Leadership Southern Maryland: A Call to Action |
| |
It's about more than being a leader. It's a way of a life, a call to action.
That's what Executive Director Karen Holcomb and the president of the board of the directors, Thomas Jarboe, wanted their new group, Leadership Southern Maryland, to be when they started it a little more than a year ago.
The two began to organize the group after graduating from Leadership Maryland, which was originally created under the auspices of the Maryland Chamber of Commerce but became an independent organization in 1997 to create a network of leaders who would become dedicated to solving the state's challenges...

"Leadership Southern Maryland Set to Launch Inaugural, Tuition-based 9-month program in September of 2008" |
| |
Leadership Southern Maryland (LSM) is set to launch its inaugural, tuition-based 9-month program in September of 2008. According to four of the twelve steering committee members: Thomas Jarboe, Karen Holcomb, Patrick Murphy and Ray Wernecke who met with The Bay Net, the program is an outcropping of Leadership Maryland, of which only Holcomb is not a graduate. “Karen was too busy sending others to the Maryland program to attend herself,” said Jarboe.
Describing the program is difficult at best. LSM is a broadly scoped study of Southern Maryland where participants seek to gain an awareness of regional opportunities, weakness, strengths, and threats over the course of the program. When asked whether or not LSM was to be a think-tank, those in attendance quickly said that, “no, it is more that.”...
